Uber has done a pretty good job at giving the Taxi industry a run for their money in terms of price competitiveness – often to the chagrin of drivers and delight of riders, especially in terms of affordability. UberPOOL is essentially UberX shared with other passengers going in your direction. Drivers get to make more money (because they are carrying more passengers in one trip, and in one car), and passengers get to pay less for a trip.
How UberPOOL works
With UberPOOL, two or more riders are charged for the ride – with the fare split into fair shares for all passengers. To use the service, you only need to select uberPOOL at the bottom of your screen and set your pickup location and destination. You’ll see a guaranteed fare in the app. Riders would most likely get matched with another rider traveling the same way. However, another awesome thing is that whether or not you are connected with another rider, you’ll always pay the guaranteed fare. After the ride, riders can go their separate ways and Uber would calculate the fare that accrues to each party and make the deduction from their registered credit cards/other form of payment.
Cities Where UberPOOL is Available
As at July 2nd 2016, cities where riders can use the service are as follows:
|COUNTRY||CITIES WITH UBERPOOL|
|US & Canada:||Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Washington DC|
|China:||Beijing, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Tianjin, Wuhan|
|India:||Bangalore, New Delhi|

Benefit of UberPOOL to Riders
It is a good thing to be able to minimize travel cost by having someone else in the vehicle. This is especially beneficial to users who travel a common route to work every single day. A daily travel means that you spend a lot on transport. It is therefore an added value to find a service that lets you beat down that cost by sharing that ride with someone who is going in the same direction. As we have gathered from an Uber post, uberPOOL is always up to 55% cheaper than uberX—no matter what. The exact discount varies depending on time of day. Nights and weekends see the highest discounts. The service is equally beneficial to those who love to meet new people. Although some people want a quiet ride – especially as most people take time to prepare their mind for the day’s work during their ride, it is very possible that you meet people who share your interests. This surely improves people’s general living and makes the daily journey to work probably a lot more fun than it would have been.
What’s in it for Drivers?
If you are an Uber driver/partner, the question you probably have is “will i make more money from this”? I think it depends. For cities with a high amount of passengers, you get fuller Uberpool rides, and make more money. For cities where the demand from passengers is not optimal, it might not be a great service (from a driver’s point of view). Whatever the case may be, the service may be a good way to keep busy early in the morning since workers are found heading to their respective offices in the early hours of the day. You can do a couple of early POOL rides before going on with your normal day.
The service is probably more good news for users than drivers. However, this sort of improvements is what makes Uber as a service generally reliable.
