Uber Lost and Found: I Lost or Found An Item

Driving for Uber is a great way to earn money on your own schedule. Basically, you decide how busy you want to be by picking your hours. The job is easy and depending on your city, you get the chance to pick up and drop off multiple Uber passengers daily.  Sometimes, riders may forget their personal belongings like phones and other items in your car. This happens a lot and prompted Uber to write an article titled – Uber Lost and Found. It details items commonly forgotten in an Uber. So, what do you do when this happens to you?

In this post, we will discuss what a driver should do when an Uber rider forgets an item in an Uber. We will also review steps the rider should take to retrieve the item. Uber Lost and Found

Uber Lost and Found – What to do as an Uber driver:

In some cases, the passenger remembers and begins to flood your phone with calls and texts asking how to retrieve the forgotten item. As an Uber driver, what do you do when an Uber passenger forgets an item in your vehicle?

It is important to be respectful to your passengers as Uber always asks passengers to rate their drivers. Also, Uber drivers can be reported and terminated from the service if there are passenger reports of misconduct on the part of the drivers. So, no matter how persistent and burdensome the passenger becomes, do not get irate or irritated. Keep your calm.

The process to follow is quite simple. See below:

  • Take a picture of the item
  • Share details of the item and the photo with Uber here
  • Uber will try to contact the rider and help arrange a convenient time and place to meet within 48 hours
  • Keep the item safe till it has changed hands
  • In some cities like Boston and Chicago, Uber will charge the rider $15 and it will be used to compensate the driver. This policy will soon be introduced globally. This fee will be given to you with no deductions.

Uber Lost and Found -What to do as an Uber rider:

  • Open the Uber app
  • Click menu, then “Help”
  • Click Trips and Fare Review” and select the trip you took
  • Select “I lost an item,” then “Contact my driver about a lost item”
  • Input your phone number and click submit

Please note that you might be charged a fee of $15 once you retrieve your item. This fee is a compensation that will be transferred to the driver who returned your item.

Please do not bombard the Uber driver with calls and demands. The driver is working and will decide on a convenient time to return your item.

Conclusion

It is important for Uber riders to do a quick sweep of the vehicle before alighting. This way you can grab any forgotten item before the driver leaves. Also it is important for drivers as well to remind passengers to check the vehicle for any forgotten item before driving off.

Handling an Accident While Driving For Uber

As an Uber driver, getting into accident while driving for Uber can be nerve wracking. Not only are you worried about yourself and your vehicle; you might be carrying a passenger who might also be at risk. As an Uber driver, you are bound to spend quite a number of hours on the road and as they say, “accidents happen”. To ensure that you have some kind of protection when accidents happen, it is important to have some degree of insurance coverage. In some instances, Uber’s insurance will kick in while in other instances, your insurance will have to cover the cost of the damages (we will review these instances momentarily).

It is important to know what to do in tricky situations like this. In this post, we will describe steps to take and certain precautions to abide by when in an accident while driving for Uber

This tips will ensure you have sufficient information to back up your claims. Accident While Driving For Uber

Before we tell you what steps to take, let’s review in 3 instances when Uber’s insurance will likely kick in.

  • When you log into the app and waiting for a ride request

In this instance called Period 1, you might want to contact your insurance provider. Ensure that your insurance provider has prior knowledge of your job as a rideshare driver. This way, they can provide you with adequate cover that will kick in for this situation. If they do not know you are a rideshare driver prior to your accident, they might refuse your insurance claims. Uber will not provide collision cover but might spring to provide liability cover (at a much limited rate).

  • When you accept the ride request and on your way to pick up the passenger

In this situation, Uber provides liability and collision coverage of up to $1 million dollars with a $1000 deductible.

  • When you pick up a passenger and driving to their destination

Uber provides liability and collision coverage of up to $1 million dollars with a $1000 deductible.

What to do when you are involved in an accident while driving for Uber:

  1. It is important to stay calm
  2. Check to see if you and your passengers have injuries or are in harm’s way
  3. Call the paramedics and the police if necessary
  4. Within the first minutes of the accidents, use your phone to take pictures of the scene; focus on details like the damage to your vehicle from all angles, the other party’s license plate, vehicle, drivers’ license and insurance card.
  5. Check for witnesses and get their information. Be sure they are willing to corroborate their version of the accident when called upon to do so.
  6. Never accept you are at fault. Just listen and take notes if possible
  7. Overall be polite and respectful. Do not get into altercations that might escalate the situation.
  8. If asked for your insurance details, provide Uber’s insurance details. This information can be found on the Uber app. Relay this information to the other party.

Once you have done all the above, contact the nearest Uber local office in your city or find help within the app. According to Uber’s website, to relay the details of the accident; Head to Trip Issues and Fare Adjustments on the app > I was in an accident. Then, let Uber know what happened. Uber will reach out to confirm everyone’s safety and gather any other required information.

Conclusion

Your online status on the Uber driver app during the accident will determine who to contact during an accident. If you were offline, it is best to contact your personal insurance company as Uber will not bear responsibility. If you were on online mode in the driver app and driving to pick up a passenger or drop off a passenger, you must contact Uber first. The important thing is to handle things professionally if you get in an accident while driving for Uber.

During investigations, Uber will deactivate your account and this can take up to few weeks. You will not be allowed to pick up passengers until investigations have been concluded.

We wish you safe driving.

Drive with Uber In Nairobi, Kenya

With over 5000 drivers signed up to the Uber service in Kenya, driving for Uber is one way to grow your income on your own terms. If you want to become an Uber driver and need directions on how to begin, you have come to the right place. Kenya is Uber’s second largest market in Africa with over 363,000 riders and counting. This post will relay step by step process to driving with Uber in Nairobi, Kenya.

Drive With Uber In Nairobi

The ‘Age-Factor’

Before you can drive with Uber in Nairobi, you must know that Uber takes its age policy pretty seriously. This age policy varies for different cities. To become an Uber driver in Nairobi, you have to be at least 21 years old. If you meet this requirement, please proceed to fulfil the steps listed below:

  • Must have a photo (clear headshot)
  • Drivers must provide valid driver’s license
  • Must have National ID card
  • PSV Insurance for your vehicle
  • Have a valid phone number and email
  • Ensure the vehicle registration number is listed
  • Uber in Nairobi accepts both official and temporary registration documents
  • The vehicle does not need to be registered in your name to qualify
  • Documents must clearly show a valid expiration date
  • Drivers must pass a screening process
  • Drivers must have an accepted vehicle (check below for additional info)
  • At some point during registration, you would also have to take your car through vehicle inspection at an Uber-approved auto shop or Uber activation centre in your area
  • Vehicle insurance document (if you already have a car you intend to use)

Note-It is essential to upload very clear pictures (jpg format typically has the least issues) in which all of the numbers and information on the pictures are very visible.  The name on the documents must match your official birth name and the name you provide on the Uber signup page.

STEP 2 – Signup

After you have gathered these documents and met the above requirements, you can move to the next step which is to signup online. The documents that you have gathered are what you would have to submit online. You can go here to sign up with our special referral link. This link redirects to the Uber official signup page.

STEP 3 – Uber Background Check and On-Boarding Process

Uber will typically take between 2 to 4 weeks to perform their background checks. Specifically, they will take the documents provided by the intending drivers in Step 1, and do the following.

  • A Comprehensive Criminal Background Check
  • Check to see if you have a clean driving record (to be sure that your license has never been revoked for any reason).

Subsequently, you will be tested on all of the general knowledge that Uber drivers are expected to have. You can prepare for this by asking already-employed Uber drivers for advice on what you should know for these tests. It is expected that as an aspiring Uber driver in Nairobi, you should have great knowledge of the routes in Nairobi without relying a great deal on maps. This knowledge is a must have for every intending Uber driver. After these tests, there will be a few more interviews and some onboarding sessions.

STEP 4 – Get an Uber Approved Vehicle

It is important to note that Uber has various services which require different types of vehicles. You should decide on which of the services you are interested in before buying a car (if you do not have one). See the section below on “Selecting an Uber Service” for more information. Your car will be rejected if it has major cosmetic damage or it is salvaged (was involved in a major accident and had to be fixed with parts from other vehicles or rebuilt). There might be some extra requirements (besides the general) depending on the type of Uber service you choose. Your vehicle must be from the year 2006 or newer.

Selecting an Uber Service

Selecting an Uber service is largely dependent on figuring out which one of the available services you can afford. The Uber services available in Nairobi are the non-commercial UberX; UberSELECT and UberCHAPCHAP.

UberX is the mid-tier priced Uber service, and it also gets the most patronage from Uber passengers across the globe for this reason. This is the category I would recommend starting out with.

UberSELECT can be found in the same class as the UberX services but it is a step above the UberX. UberSELECT vehicles are classy entry level luxury cars (but not as nice as UberBLACK vehicles). Drivers in this service have ratings of 4.75 and above.

UberCHAPCHAP was introduced in Nairobi in 2018. Chap Chap which means “hurry hurry” was designed to provide quick and inexpensive mode of transportation. To ensure that riders can afford this service, Uber teamed up with CMC motors to import fuel efficient vehicles, the Suzuki Altos that will be offered to Uber drivers with high ratings. Stanbic bank will be financing these vehicles for drivers and drivers will be able to own these vehicles in three years.

What to Do if Your Vehicle Does Not Fit Uber Requirements

If your personal vehicle does not fit the requirements that are necessary for an Uber vehicle, it’s not a problem. You do not necessarily have to buy a fancy new car – a used car that meets the requirements of your selected service should do. However, many people tend to invest in a new car before driving professionally with Uber in Nairobi. This isn’t a bad idea if you have the funds. Please see the “Nice to Know” section below for due diligence you should probably carry out if you intend to buy a car specifically for Uber. You also have the option of renting an Uber Car through recommended Uber Rental Partners. You can find out more once you begin the online registration process here: SIGNUP ONLINE.

However, if you wish to use your own smart phone, that is perfectly fine. You can read more on how to download the Uber driver app here

Nice to Know

If you want to become an Uber driver in Nairobi, it is important to know that you will have to bear the cost of car related expenses like fuel, car maintenance, insurance costs, car depreciation, Uber royalties and other maintenance related expenses.

If you want to assess the profitability of Uber – whether as a one man business (a sole Uber driver); or as an Entrepreneur with multiple Uber cars in his/her fleet, then you need to download either of our Uber Kits at the top right corner of the pages below:

All About Uber Express Pool Service

Uber continues to dominate existing and new markets with variety of services tailored to suit the needs of customers. Selecting an Uber service to use is largely dependent on figuring out which one of the available services you can afford. Uber’s mid-tier priced services include the UberX, UberXL and UberPOOL; with UberPOOL being the cheapest. UberPOOL allows two or more riders to share a ride with the fare split into fair shares for all passengers. To use the service, select UberPOOL and set your pickup location and destination. You’ll see a guaranteed fare in the app. Riders would most likely get matched with another rider traveling the same way. Whether or not you are connected with another rider, you’ll always pay the guaranteed fare.

Now, Uber has introduced Uber Express Pool modeled after the UberPOOL service with some changes. The service first piloted in San Francisco and has now spread to 6 more cities: Los Angeles, Washington D.C, Denver, Miami, Philadelphia and San Diego with the hope of spreading to further. Uber Express Pool

How does Uber Express Pool work for riders?

With Uber Express POOL, passengers will be asked to walk to a pick up location or be dropped off in a dropoff point close to their destination. This is an effort to make the POOL routes more direct. Riders around you will be asked to wait for a few minutes at the pickup location. Riders will also split the fare just like UberPOOL. It is about 25 – 50 percent cheaper than the UberPOOL service.

Bear in mind that the UberPOOL option is still available and riders can select whether to be picked up from their homes using UberPOOL; or walk to a pickup location with Uber Express POOL.

What is in it for drivers?

Unlike UberPOOL where drivers have to drive to different pickup locations, the pickup location is just one spot. According to Uber, “you’ll earn the new flat fare for every added pickup stop, in addition to your usual POOL rates.”

Conclusion

At this rate, Uber is competing with public transport rates. It is even modeled after public transportation where riders walk to the bus stop to wait for a bus. Now riders have a pre-determined pickup spot where they wait for a few minutes for the Uber driver to arrive. The service is better that public transportation because it is a more comfortable way to ride.

Uber is seeking to make the cost of transportation dirt cheap making it possible for everyone to ride the Uber way.

All About Uber In Lisbon, Portugal

Over the years, Uber has experienced push-back as they launched in certain cities. These push-backs came in form of protests by local taxi drivers, bans and even fines from local police. Uber in Lisbon, Portugal is not left out. In 2016, Lisbon taxi drivers staged protests that resulted in traffic gridlock in the city. Local taxi operators were unhappy that rideshare companies like Uber were exempt from certain transport regulations.

Through all these, Uber has either stood its ground or retreated. In Taiwan, Uber stopped operations after it was banned for operating illegally. The ride share giant later resumed operations after it came to terms with state laws.

In France, Uber’s service UberPOP was quickly banned by the French government due to the unfair competition. The UberPOP service allowed non-professional drivers to drive with Uber, and when they were fined by authorities, Uber stepped in and paid the fines.

Meanwhile, regular taxi drivers were required to undergo formal training. This strategy adopted by Uber prompted an anti-Uber protest in cities in France that quickly evolved to Guerrilla warfare between regular taxi drivers and Uber drivers in France as taxi drivers flipped over and burnt Uber cars.

In Portugal, thousands of taxi drivers united and brought traffic to a crawl prompting local police to be on standby in case of violence. In late 2017, Uber drivers staged a protest citing the unfair fines meted on them by local police in Portugal.

It remains unclear if Uber has been declared legal in the city but the service continues to operate.

Selecting an Uber Service

Selecting an Uber service is largely dependent on figuring out which one of the available services you can afford. You have a choice between the non-commercial UberX, UberGREEN and the commercial UberBLACK.

UberX is the mid-tier priced Uber service, and it also gets the most patronage from Uber passengers across the globe for this reason. This is the category I would recommend starting out with.

With UberBLACK, riders should expect to be picked up by professionally trained drivers who dress to suit the service. Drivers in this service are held to high standards. It is the most expensive and classiest service with black high-end vehicles. This service always has a limited number of cars operating in cities. Vehicles under this service include Acura: RDX, RLX, TL, TLX, RSX, Toyota: Land Cruiser, Sequoia and others.

UberGREEN involves the use of electric cars in a bid to reduce carbon footprint in the environment.

7 Tips for the First-Time Car Buyer

As a first-time Car Buyer, the process can be nerve-wracking. To drive for Uber, you will need a vehicle and there is no harm in doing research before you get one.  In this post, our guest writer Lauren Bricks will be sharing useful tips to apply before you buy your desired car.

When you’re about to buy a car for the first time in your life, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressure of doing it right. After all, you are a first-time car buyer, and you would want to spend that hard-earned money on something that is worth it.

To help you make an informed decision, here are seven first time car buyer tips that you might find useful.

1. Do your research

It’s good if you already have a car in mind. However, you might want to do more research first. For all you know, there are dealerships near you that are selling the same make of car, but in a much better condition, and with a lower price tag.

If you’re still car-hunting, take the time to scour all the new or used car dealers in your area. You can also go online and read reviews of vehicles, as well as ratings of dealerships so you’ll know their reputation or if the customer service is any good, among other things.

2. Do not buy on your first visit

Once you’ve pinpointed a car dealer, pay them a visit and check out what’s available. But whatever you do, don’t immediately snap one up on your first visit. Considering how dealerships inflate their prices, you need to play a little hard-to-get. Once you’ve established that you’re a bit of a tough customer, it will be very likely that the dealership will offer you a better deal.

3. It’s all in the timing

If you visit a dealership towards the end of the month, the chances of getting a great deal are better, simply because dealers have to meet their monthly quotas. As far as they’re concerned, a sale at a lower price is better than no sale at all. First-Time Car Buyer

4. Consider a used car

A brand-new car is good, but for a first-time car buyer, a used car makes for a great first car. Used cars are less expensive, are already depreciated, and don’t require high insurance coverage.

5. Check what’s under the hood

Sometimes, the excitement of buying your first car gets the better of you when you see one that you fall in love with immediately. However, it’s never good to buy a car just because you like the way it looks.

If you know anything about cars, then you should check under the hood. If you don’t, maybe you can bring along a friend or a family member who does. You should also check the interior of the car and see the condition of the upholstery, car stereo installation, among other things.

6. Don’t be pressured to buy

Sellers and dealers know a first-time buyer when they see one, and they will do and say whatever they can to get you to buy a car at a price that puts you at a disadvantage.  If you think you’re likely to be swayed by all that sales talk, bring a level-headed friend or relative to help you deflect pushy dealers and sellers.

7. Take the car for a test drive

A test drive is a must when you’re buying a car, whether used or brand new. When test-driving, drive the car like you’ve already paid for it. Drive at different speeds, test the brakes, check how well it hugs the turns, run the AC at full blast, or do just about anything you want to do with it.

Hopefully, the tips above can help you out as a first-time car buyer.

Top Smart Companions To Your Uber App

Uber is a comfortable way to ride for cheap. Request a ride using the Uber app downloaded on your phone, select a service and then wait for your driver to arrive. The Uber service is convenient and you can relax while the driver worries about getting you to your destination in record time. However, Uber doesn’t have all answers to your travel questions. What To Do When An Uber Rider Damages Your Vehicle

It is true that passengers are the life line of your Uber business; but what do you do when they cause you more harm than good? Before we explore this dilemma, every Uber driver needs to know that passengers can make or mar your Uber business. An Uber rider expects professional service from drivers at all times and drivers need to meet this expectation. Satisfied passengers will guarantee repeat businesses and help keep up your ratings.

Note that Uber drivers can be reported and terminated from the service if there are passenger reports of misconduct on the part of the drivers.

There are instances where as an Uber driver, you feel helpless and this can occur when a passenger damages your car. What is the next course of action? Uber Rider

Well, see below a few steps to take when an Uber rider damages your vehicle or makes a bad mess that will need significant cleaning.

Make an Official Report to Uber

Do not take the law into your hands. Make a report to Uber if the situation goes beyond the normal wear and tear.

According to the Uber website, “you may be eligible for an inconvenience fee of up to $250 based on the extent and nature of the damage.” Also, Uber will also help you when you make those insurance claims so that your car is fixed.

To back up your report, you must do the following:

  • You must make your report within 3 business days of the incident.
  • Take clear photos of the damage and make an accurate description of the accident. This is where dash cams are important. This will help the uber driver provide video recordings of the incident.
  • Get your car mechanic to provide a rough estimate of what the repair will cost within 5 business days of the incident.

If a mess that requires significant cleaning was made, you must do the following:

  • Take a picture of the mess and report this to Uber within 3 working days of the trip.
  • Uber will review the mess and send you a flat fee to cover the cleaning if it is deemed appropriate.
  • In other cases, if the rider is found responsible for the mess, Uber will contact the Uber rider and the rider will be charged the cleaning fee.
  • Make sure you provide accurate and sufficient proof to back your claims or you may not be reimbursed for your trouble.

Conclusion

Uber is making no promises in this case. Not every report made is found to be with merit. However, Uber is reassuring drivers that they will do their best to ensure the cost of the repairs and cleaning is not borne by the driver.

Uber Elevate – Flying Taxis To Become A Reality

There is a reason why Uber continues to dominate the transportation industry; and not just because it’s a pioneer in the rideshare industry or the impressive number of drivers signed up under the Uber service. Uber remains a force to be reckoned with due to its continuous ability to evolve while introducing new variants of rideshare. Uber’s services range from the mid-tier UberX service to UberBLACK – the most expensive and classiest service with black high-end vehicles. Between these services are the UberXL – the 6 passenger version of UberX; UberSELECT – the service that sits between the UberX and the UberBLACK services; then the UberSUV – which is the 6 passenger version of UberBLACK. In some markets, Uber introduced customized services to meet the unique transport problems peculiar to those cities. In densely populated cities like India, you will find UberGO; a chauffeur driven hatchback.

Now, Uber is set to launch electric VTOL aircrafts by 2020 and will pilot this service in three cities: Dallas, Dubai and Los Angeles. According to the company’s website, “urban air transportation will use three-dimensional airspace to alleviate transportation congestion on the ground. A network of small, electric aircraft that take off and land vertically.”

What to know About This service

  • The service is called Uber Elevate
  • VTOL aircraft means Vertical Take-off and Landing
  • Uber signed a Space Act Agreement with NASA that will design an air control system that will manage these “flying taxis”.
  • These aircrafts will utilize electric propulsion to eliminate noise and pollution associated with other commercial aircrafts
  • Possibly autonomous flying taxis
  • Uber is making strategic partnerships to bring this vision to life
  • Uber is aspiring to ensure that riding with VTOL aircrafts will be inexpensive and even cheaper than owning a car.

How Uber Elevate Might Work

  • A passenger books a flight via the Uber app
  • Get to a sky port on the roof of a building closest to you
  • Then you will be ushered along with all waiting passengers into the waiting aircraft

What we think

It is obvious that these plans are not cast in stone. There will be improvements and eliminations during the design and launch process of Uber elevate. However, it is exciting to imagine the prospect of bypassing the crazy LA traffic and flying across town in a couple of minutes. The merits are impressive; think shorter travel time, cleaner environments and a smarter way to travel.

The possibility of these aircrafts being autonomous might not be well received. It seems very unlikely that a lot of people will allow themselves to be flown by a fully autonomous aircraft.

For now, we will be flying in piloted airplanes and weaving through traffic while we wait and see what Uber will birth come 2020.
