Uber launched operations in India by introducing the luxury service called UberBLACK. This service ensures Uber riders are picked up in luxurious vehicles driven by professional drivers. UberBLACK was available in Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai before Uber restricted the service to just Mumbai.
If you wish to drive with UberBLACK in India, we have provided all you need to know below.
STEP 1: Ready These Required Documents
First of all, you will need to prepare a few documents that are essential for you to have before you can drive with Uber in India as an UberBLACK driver. These documents include:
- A Driver’s License
- Commercial driving license
- A Delhi PSV badge or up-to-date Police Verification.
- An RC – Registration Certificate (if you already have a car, else see ‘Get an UberBLACK Car’ section below)
- Personal details like a permanent address, contact details, bank account details and a Permanent Account Number, or PAN, that allows India’s tax authorities to deduct revenues from pay packets
- Full commercial vehicle insurance
- Government issued IDs
- State-issued permits
STEP 2: Signup Online
Once you have all of these documents, the next step is to sign up through the Uber website – using our link: www.uberkit.net/signup. (You get a signup bonus if you use our link, which has our signup referral code already pre-populated).
STEP 3: Wait for Uber Background Checks
It will typically take between 6 to 8 weeks to perform background checks on Intending Uber in India drivers. Specifically, they will take the documents submitted by every candidate, and conduct a comprehensive criminal background check.
STEP 4: Get an Approved UberBLACK Car
UberBLACK cars need to have an all-black exterior with black, grey or beige leather interior. Whatever type of car you pick; it generally needs to be a model from the year 2012 or newer. A typical UberBLACK car must have a minimum width of 1700mm and must be Uber approved. The type of qualifying sedans for UberBLACK include the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sunny Altis, Innova, Honda City, Ecosport. You can check the list here for an analysis of UberBLACK cars and what we recommend.
STEP 5: Go for Your Interview
Once you have completed the preceding steps, you will be able to go into the Uber office for an interview, but you should make sure you have sufficient knowledge of the streets and routes in your area/city. You should be dressed professionally for this interview.
If you pass the interview, you will be invited for a training session at a specific date (Training takes between three to six hours, based on interviews with Uber drivers), after which your vehicle’s documents will be checked, and you will officially drive with Uber in India.
You will also receive an Uber-issued cell phone which will have the Uber application installed on it to allow you receive ride requests. However, if you wish to use your own smartphone, it is perfectly fine to return the cell phone.
STEP 6: What to do if Your Vehicle Does Not Fit Uber Requirements
Keep in mind, there is no need to give up if your personal vehicle does not fit the requirements that are necessary for an Uber vehicle—in fact, many people tend to invest in a new car before becoming professional Uber drivers.
However, I would recommend not going overboard when you are purchasing a new car to be used as an Uber vehicle. It is a good idea to select an average but sturdy car that is not a particularly new or fancy model but fits UberBLACK car requirements. Note – See the “Nice to Know” section for due diligence you should probably do, before buying a car specifically for Uber.
STEP 7: Pricing
An UberBLACK driver who owns his car, earns between Rs80,000 ($1400) and Rs120,000($2000) in a month after paying 20% of his earnings to Uber as a technology and service fee.
Uber charges Rs 120- base fare, followed by Rs 12 per km fare.
Nice to Know
UberBLACK was launched in Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai and currently seems to operate only in Mumbai.
If you wish to drive with Uber in India, please be aware that you will be utilizing a certain amount of money to pay for gas. If, for example, you earn approximately 1.2 lakhs a month, you will spend about 29,000 Indian rupees (around $440) on gas every month out of that money.
In addition to the afore-mentioned, you have other costs like car maintenance, insurance costs, car depreciation, and Uber royalties.
If you are looking to do proper due diligence before acquiring a car and want to assess the profitability of Uber as a business whether as a one-man business (a sole Uber driver), or as an Entrepreneur with multiple Uber cars in his/her fleet, then download our Uber kit at the top right of the linked page below:
PS: The investment that you will need to make in order to obtain commercial licensing as well as insurance is typically high, which is why I would suggest the UberBLACK service only for those that wish to become a driver full time and for a long period of time. If you just want to supplement your income, then you might just want to sign up for UberX (If you would like to become an UberX driver go here).
