Tips For Uber Passenger Safety

Uber as a pioneer in ridesharing has become a preferred means of transportation for many. Uber drivers and Uber passengers who have signed up to use the Uber service are matched once a ride request is placed. This makes Uber  a middleman between these two parties. Uber, in its bid to protect both parties created a plethora of in-app features to protect passengers and drivers. Also, background checks are carried out by the rideshare giant on its drivers.  However, the Uber service is not devoid of loopholes. Passengers have to be at alert all the time. This post was created to share some Uber passenger safety tips.

Rape and assault cases have been brought against various Uber drivers around the world. In 2017, an Uber passenger in Virginia was abducted and sexually assaulted by an Uber driver after he picked her up. In California, an unconscious teenage girl was raped by an Uber driver a few feet from her home and was discovered by concerned relatives who used the tracking feature to locate the Uber.  An Indian Uber driver was arrested for raping a female passenger in December, of 2014.  Uber Passenger Safety

Despite the perks of patronizing Uber’s services and how easy the service has made transportation, it is particularly important for passengers to be vigilant during trips and also to take advantage of all the Uber app safety features.  Below are some tips to ensure Uber passenger safety:

Tips For Uber Passenger Safety

Verify Your Driver and Vehicle details on the Uber app

The driver’s first name, photo, license plate number, picture of the vehicle and their driver’s rating is shown to every rider once a ride request is successfully placed. With this, passengers will be unlikely to fall victim to fake drivers.

Once the driver is outside, it is important to verify the car details and the driver should identify you by name and vice versa.

Request Your Ride and Wait Indoors

There is no point waiting outside for your Uber cab to arrive. This can make you anxious and a target for fake drivers. Wait indoors till the Uber app notifies you of the driver’s arrival.

Share Trip Details with Loved Ones

Uber has provided a feature within the app that allows riders share their trip details with loved ones. Details like ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) and route can be seen by whomever the trip is shared with. Hence, someone other than yourself can keep an eye on you during the trip and monitor your progress till you arrive at your destination. While en route, tap “Share status” in the app to share your driver’s name, photo, license plate, and location with a friend or family member. They can see all these details without downloading the Uber app.

Seat at the Backseat

This helps create some personal space between you and the driver. This also makes it easier for you to exit the car when you want to.

Trust your Instincts

If something doesn’t feel right, just make your excuses and exit the vehicle. It’s better to be safe than sorry.  If during the ride you feel threatened in any way, call 911 immediately.

Overall, Uber has tried to help passengers feel safe by providing in app safety features. However, human resources can be really difficult to control or manage. The onus lies on all passengers to exhibit caution and stay alert before using an Uber.

Uber Payment Options For Drivers and Passengers

Uber has made transportation easier and more convenient, it is quickly becoming the sought after option. Driving with Uber is one way you can earn more money.  It affords flexible hours and a chance to make good money on your own schedule. With Uber drivers, you can be rest assured of professional service as drivers try to keep up their ratings. Also, Uber drivers can be reported and terminated from the service if there are passenger reports of misconduct on the part of the drivers.

With the Uber app, ride requests have been simplified for riders and drivers. Uber drivers are matched with passengers once requests are placed. Payments can also be effected via the app. In this post, we will discuss Uber payment options for both passengers and drivers.

Uber payment options

Uber passengers get a fare estimate before even starting a ride. This helps them decide if to go on with the ride or cancel the ride request. This fare estimate is shown to the rider before completing the ride request process on the Uber app. Passengers pay for the rides via the credit or debit cards tied to their Uber accounts. Some markets like Nigeria and India allow passengers pay for rides using cash.

For drivers, Uber credits their accounts at the end of the week after deducting commissions. So, how exactly does this work?

Now, riders have the opportunity to pay for rides either with cash or electronic cards.  You can add or update your Uber payment options as needed. To pay for rides, you can update your payment method to the options available in your state- credit cards, cash, or a PayPal account.

At the end of the ride, your selected payment method is charged.  To add, modify or delete a payment method, follow the steps below:

2. Tap Add Payment.
Then carry out any of the actions below:

Uber Payment Options for Drivers

First let’s review how driver earnings are calculated:

Your final pay at the end of the day depends on some factors:

  • Trip fare – This is calculated based on the time and distance of the trip
  • Commission – How much commission Uber takes off each ride fare
  • Booking fee – Uber collects this from the rider on your behalf. This is used to cover the costs of insurance and safety features. It doesn’t affect your fare
  • Tolls – If you had to pay toll at any point during the ride.

Your earning per ride = Trip fare + Tolls

Drivers have 2 Uber payment options:

  1. Direct Deposits – This happens every Thursday via direct deposits straight into your bank account.
  2. Uber Instant Pay – With the use of your personal debit card, the Uber Instant Pay option allows you to cash out up to 5 times a day. However, you are charged $0.50 for every time you cash out. Also, most Mastercard, Visa or Discover U.S. debit cards associated with traditional checking and savings accounts are accepted when you use them on Instant Pay. Instant Pay allows drivers to cash out their earnings on demand (instead of waiting a full week!). The program disburses funds upon the driver’s request and has no minimum cash-out amount.

You can also request an Uber debit card that links to a business account setup through Uber’s partnership with GoBank. Disbursing to the GoBank card does not incur a $0.50 fee; however it involves all of the responsibilities that come with having a checking account. Visit the nearest Uber office to you to find out if this option is available in your state.

Conclusion

For passengers, the Uber app strives to make transportation as seamless as possible to make the process easy for riders.

Uber as a business is quite flexible and lucrative. It gives car owners opportunities to make money using their personal vehicles at their own convenience. You can easily join the Uber business by clicking this link.

More About Volkswagen’s Rideshare Company- MOIA

Uber’s success story has elicited different responses from automakers. Some car companies reacted by throwing their weight behind Uber’s competitors while others launched their own ride-hailing service to compete with Uber in the rideshare industry.

In May of 2016, auto giant Toyota announced that it would be entering a partnership with Uber. Uber and Toyota would work on creating new leasing options that would allow Uber drivers lease vehicles with Toyota Financial Services providing financing to these MOIAdrivers.  General Motors founded its own car-sharing service, Maven. The company also plowed half a billion dollars into Uber’s rival company – Lyft. Another rideshare startup- Gett, was a recipient of $300 million investment from automaker Volkswagen. Now, Volkswagen is all set to launch a mobility service called MOIA. The auto giant officially launched MOIA in December of 2016.

More About MOIA

MOIA was launched as an independent company of the Volkswagen Group. The company was created to target transportation issues in urban cities. According to the company’s website, MOIA “will develop and offer an extensive portfolio of on-demand mobility services that make the lives of people living in urban areas better, cleaner and safer.”

MOIA is tasked with “the in-house development of IT-based on-demand offerings such as ridehailing and ridepooling services” and will be based in Berlin, Hamburg and Helsinki. The company hopes to redefine the face of mobility services and become an industry leader by 2025

Blueprint

In the face of existing competitors like Uber and Lyft, it is apparent that Volkswagen has a lot of hurdles to cross. Uber is continually seeking ways of meeting passenger needs. The company is known for its aggressive stance while dominating new territories. Not only that, Uber tailors services to match markets. A typical example is the UberMOTO in Bangladesh. This motorcycle service will help commuters navigate through the city’s famous traffic in record time.

So, how does MOIA hope to achieve set targets?

  • specifically investing in digital startups
  • collaborating with cities
  • Partnering with established transport providers.

The aim of the new company is to develop and offer an extensive portfolio of on-demand mobility services. This can clearly be achieved by aligning forces with the parties mentioned above. By investing 300 million dollars in the cab hailing service- Gett, it is apparent that MOIA is well on its way to providing mobility for all. In its media page, MOIA’s CEO Ole Harms stated that, “Together with Gett we are pursuing a clearly defined expansion strategy in Europe – only recently, three of the Group’s brands launched the first joint initiative with attractive vehicle packages for Gett drivers in the growth market of Moscow. Further markets will follow soon.”

MOIA is pursuing creating a pooling business like Uber and just like Uber, on-demand services will be carried out via an app.

We are looking forward to more innovations from MOIA.

Book A Ride Now Or Later With Moovn

Moovn is a rideshare application that enables users book a driver on demand or in advance. The web-based booking platform enables you to request a ride at the comfort of your desktop, tablet or mobile phone. The Moovn app was created by Godwin Gabriel who comes from a non-tech background. He took up the challenge of teaching himself how to code and in nine months, he had the skill required to develop the Moovn app. Moovn first launched in Seattle in 2015 and joined the bandwagon of rideshare companies operating in America.

This app bears some similarities with rideshare giant, Uber. Users can book a car now or schedule for later. Drivers also get to control their schedule. This is where the distinct similarities between the two companies end. Moovn was launched to fill the void left by companies like Uber and Lyft. It’s no debate that Uber drivers have expressed displeasure about the percentage of commission Uber takes off fares. This has been a bone of contention between Uber and drivers since Uber increased its commission from 20 percent to even 30 percent over the years. Moovn in a bid to attract drivers onto its platform takes just 15percent commission. Also, passengers will enjoy rides all around the clock with no fear of surge pricing.

moovn

These developments largely contribute to the growth of the black-owned ride-hailing service. In some parts of the world where Moovn operates, it customizes some of the products offered in the foreign market by allowing ridesharing through other means like motorcycles and Rickshaws in addition to cars.

How to use the Moovn App

  • Download and setup account on the Moovn app

More About The Skedaddle Bus Charter app

Skedaddle bus charter is a ridesharing startup that allows a group of people share a bus to available locations or unique locations. Skedaddle was launched in 2015 by  Adam Nestler, his brother Craig, Brad Werntz and Lou Harwood and will allow users charter a bus that will go to any location in North America. You can charter a bus for you and your friends to attend an event and if there are extra seats, other users can opt for one of the free seats. This bears a resemblance to Uber’s UberPOOL. Thousands of other Skedaddle bus users can explore routes created on the app. Skedaddle pushes relevant routes to its users via push notifications, social media and email to help a route starter meet the rider minimum. Skedaddle Bus

According to the company’s website, the route starter always rides free. The next nine passengers get 20% off the full seat price, so be sure to reserve your seat early. Once live, the remaining riders pay full price. You can also reserve up to four seats for you and your crew. You have up until 48 hours prior to departure to cancel your reservation. Skedaddle does not charge its riders until 48 hours prior to departure. Routes require a minimum of 10 passengers to “go live” to guarantee Skedaddle will send a vehicle. You can tell if your route is live or not by looking at the progress bar on the route screen displayed on the app.

Skedaddle bus offers two types of transportation: public routes and private routes. Public routes work best for large events like concerts, travel between cities, or outings to large public spaces like beaches, Ski Mountains, and national parks. Private routes are the perfect fit for weddings, college socials, and corporate events.

The app enjoyed increased growth during the January 2017 women’s March on Washington. The startup experienced a surge of bookings and had to stop accepting bookings after sometime. “It was really amazing. The March overall was a great success for us,” Craig Nestler, the director of product development and co-founder of Skedaddle told Inverse. “I was on-site and it was amazing to see all these women and men dressed up with their signs ready to march.”

To get started:

  • First download the app here

  • Register on the app (You will be asked for your personal details and card details as well)

  • Start a route (You decide if you want your route to be public or private)

  • Each public route has a standard seat price. However, the first 10 riders on public routes receive discounts! On public routes, the route starter is able to reserve the first seat for free, and the next 9 riders will receive 20% off the standard seat price. Everyone else who reserves a seat after the first 10 seats have been booked will pay the standard price for the route.

  • For private routes, the user who starts the route can choose to pay a portion of the route, or the price of the bus will be split evenly amongst all (less any amount the route creator has funded). You will reserve your seat at the “Current” price displayed on the route page; however, your card will not be charged until 48 hours prior to departure and the price will continue to drop depending on the number of riders who reserve seats after you.

  • Hours prior to the departure time, if your route is live, you will receive an email that serves as your receipt and your pass when you board the bus. If you have our mobile app, you’ll receive a notification letting you know when you can check in. You’ll be able to access your pass within the app as well!

In conclusion

Routes are easily shareable in-app. You can share a Skedaddle bus route with friends or family directly from the Skedaddle app. This is an innovative startup that meets rideshare needs on a large scale. We hope so see the company spread operations outside America really soon.

All About Ford Gobike

Many Automakers are venturing into the rideshare industry. General Motors has kick-started its own car-sharing service, Maven. The company also plowed half a billion dollars into Uber’s rival company – Lyft.  Gett, a cab hailing startup is a recipient of $300 million investment from the auto giant – Volkswagen. Auto giant – BMW first took a stab at ridesharing by working with DriveNow and is now throwing its weight behind California’s carpooling startup, Scoop. Automaker Toyota, announced on the 25th of May, 2016 that it would be entering a partnership with Uber.

In this post, we will be discussing how Ford Motors launched a bikeshare system called Ford GoBike. The company first launched in San Francisco on August 2013 with the name Bay Area Bike Share. At that time, operations were restricted to part of San Francisco with just 700 bikes in about 70 stations. The Different Uber Products

Uber products reflect the desires of consumers. Uber Products have been put in place to ensure that riders and drivers across the world are given the power to choose what they believe suits them. These products will be discussed concisely to give you a summary knowledge of all you need to choose the right service on your next trip.

The Different Uber Products

UberX

UberX is the least expensive of all Uber Products available. This makes it a recommended choice for passengers that are trying to save money or on a budget. This means two things for a potential Uber driver or entrepreneur.

  • You will get lower fare rates compared to some of the other services like UberXL, UberBLACK and UberSUV. This is not necessarily a bad thing since;
  • You will get more rider pickups. UberX is the most popular product for Uber

You see, lesser fares does not translate to a loss in this instance.

For those new to Uber, UberX is known as the entry level ‘ride sharing’ service. UberX drivers typically have cars like the Toyota Camry, Ford Escape, Ford Escort, etc. The main requirements to become an UberX driver are listed in this blog post here.

Basic requirements for UberX cars (in most cities) include:

  • It must be a model from the year 2006 or newer, and
  • It must have passed an independent inspection at designated Uber centers
  • Salvaged vehicles will not be eligible for this service
  • Proper vehicle registration documents must be submitted

For more information on selecting the right UberX vehicle, see our blog post here Uber Car Requirements: 580 UberX cars analyzed).

To sign up to drive for UberX, click: http://www.uberkit.net/signup

(You get a signup bonus, which has our signup referral code already pre-populated). Note – the links redirect to the correct Uber URL

UberBLACK

UberBLACK is often described as the luxurious version of UberX.  UberBLACK is Uber’s premier product. Just like UberX, this Uber service takes a passenger from one place to the other but in a fancier and classier ride.  UberBLACK is perhaps the most expensive product that Uber offers in most cities. This means two things for a potential Uber driver or entrepreneur:

  • You will get higher fare rates compared to some of the other services like UberX, and Uber XL (UberBlack cars are driven by professionally trained chauffeurs).
  • You will get less rider pickups compared to UberX (since it is a high-end service).
  • You will also get longer trips (Uber Black unlike UberX is allowed to pick up or drop off at the airport – this translates to more money for the driver/entrepreneur).

This particular Uber service is generally dominated by sleek, high-end sedans. In the UberBLACK Car, there can be up to four passengers at a time, just like with UberX.

One of the major differences between the two Uber Products,  UberBLACK and UberX,  is the general requirement (for most cities) that drivers on the UberBLACK platform must have commercial or livery licenses.

Basic requirements for the UberBLACK car (in most cities) include:

  • UberBLACK cars are, of course, black.
  • They absolutely need to be new models (2012 or newer) and
  • They need to have a black exterior. For the interior, a black, grey or beige leather interior should do.

For help selecting an Uber Black Car for your Uber Business, see our blog post here: Uber Car Requirements: 420 Uber Black cars analyzed).

Uber XL

Uber XL is yet another variety of Uber products that you can sign up for. This particular Uber service is pretty similar to the UberX, except for the fact that the cars are usually larger and can seat up to six people rather than the standard four for UberX vehicles.

The vehicles approved for these services are generally a minivan or crossover in most cases. You should keep in mind that the fare you receive for this service will be higher than the regular UberX. This is a good option for passengers going somewhere with a few friends or family members. It is ideal for family picnics or parties.

All the requirements for the drivers are the same as they are for the UberX, except that you need a larger vehicle for XL of course!

For help selecting an Uber XL Car for your Uber Business, see our blog post here: Uber Car Requirements: 115 Uber XL cars analyzed).

UberPlus

UberPlus falls between UberBLACK and UberX. The quality of the car required for this product offer is usually higher than that of UberX. So it is expected that this product mandates a pretty good luxury car—however; it isn’t quite on the same level as the UberBLACK.

UberPLUS cars must seat up to four (4) people; and the fare you can expect to receive is usually lesser than that of UberBLACK but higher than that of UberX.The Diferent Uber Products (2)

This is a good option for Uber partners and drivers that have or want to acquire a slightly nicer car, but don’t want to have to pay the cost for an UberBLACK car.

Uber Business Model

This post discusses the Uber business model. Specifically, the key players in the said business model. We will have another post that goes into the Business model canvas.

Personally, it fascinates me to imagine how a company that started about 7 years ago (March 2009) grew and spread to well over 311 cities in the world. You must know that the growth of  Uber’s business involved a meticulous understanding of inefficiencies with private car transportation and ruthless execution of their game plan. In this post, we will attempt to evaluate the Uber business model by checking how it works at various levels. Note – we will not be breaking down the famous “Business Model Canvas” by Alexander Osterwalder: We will likely have another post for that.

The Uber Driver

The ease with which one can become an Uber driver is one of the reasons why there are so many Uber drivers in the world today. Uber business modelDriving for Uber provides the everyday driver the opportunity to make money using their car without having to brand it with the ‘taxi’ sign. All you basically need to drive for Uber is a valid license and a car. Although there are some other necessary paper works and steps that can take 3 to 4 weeks to finalize, everything you need to become an Uber driver (at least an UberX driver) is not beyond what a usual road user should have.

Getting Uber Drivers

Uber has been very successful at getting rideshare drivers to sign up with them. They have done this successfully in city after city by employing a couple of strategies:

  •  Guaranteed Rates for Uber Drivers – To qualify for guaranteed rates, you generally would need to have received an email from Uber inviting you to participate (for existing Uber drivers). Also there are some minimum requirements you would need to meet such as minimum rides per hour and minimum trip acceptance rate.
  • Signup Incentives – For some cities you make as much as $1,000 for just signing up to be an Uber driver. Note -there are however some minimum number of ride requirements you need to meet to get this driver signup bonus.
  • Strong Brand Recognition – This is pretty self explanatory. Uber runs a lot of promotions and has a pretty close relationship with the startup ecosystem in a lot of major cities. People signup for Uber because they are a household name at this point.
  •  Car Acquisition Programs – There are various programs for potential Uber drivers who don’t have cars. (See our post here)
  •  Marketing – I am sure you see a lot of the advertisements on craigslist and even on TV now. Some people become Uber drivers because they respond to these advertisements.

The Uber Passenger

To be an Uber passenger, you ought to have downloaded the Uber mobile application which is available for windows, android and IOS.
After registering an account with Uber, you can then order a ride when you need one. To ensure that you are at rest, the app allows you to monitor the movement of the driver as they come to pick you up for the trip.

Getting Uber Passengers

Uber has also been very successful at getting ride-share passengers to sign up. A couple of the strategies they have employed include:

  •  Free Rides for New Uber Riders – Nothing beats free. By offering a free ride to new Uber riders, Uber reduces the barrier to trying out their services. Usually there is a cap on the amount that is credited to you for a free ride.  (Don’t go taking a ride from Brooklyn to Manhattan expecting for it to be free).
  • Free Rides for Existing Uber Riders – As an existing rider, you have a lot of incentive to tell your friends about Uber especially if you consider it a good service. By referring your friends/acquaintances, you are credited with a free ride also (capped at a certain amount).

Uber Fares & Payment Method

Uber car fares are set exclusively by Uber. Although there might be certain variations at certain times, the chargeuber business models are set to ensure that both Uber and the drivers are never at a disadvantage. Majorly, the type of Uber service and therefore comfort-level of the car you ordered are the greatest influencers of price range. While UberX is a regular, comfortable car and moderate fare service, Uber BLACK on the other hand involves the use of luxury vehicles and professional chauffeur services, with a fare rate to match. Until recently when cash payment was introduced to a few cities, payment was made only with the use of credit and debit cards which is pre-registered on your Uber account.

Uber Revenue

Uber makes money by taking a commission/royalty from every fare paid by  a rider for an Uber ride. Uber’s commission varies depending on your signup city.

The Uber Business Model – How to Verify Your Uber Revenue

As the owner of an Uber business, or fleet, you set the tone and are the authority over your drivers particularly in the areas of earnings and quality of service! You are the person in control of operations at every level of your business and are ultimately responsible for making the success of the uber business model as it relates to your business.

There are many factors that determine if your business will be profitable. You need to be aware and in control of all aspects of your business to ensure profits, which is the growth engine of this business.Uber Business Model

Believe it or not, revenue is not the only driving factor, though it is a major one. Be sure to also educate yourself by reading our other material on how to control costs and manage other aspects of your business that may negatively impact your revenue. While it’s true that you will make more money as an Uber Black fleet owner as compared to an UberX fleet owner, these suggestions apply to any kind of Uber business, as well as other rideshare and transportation services. We hope you enjoy these tips and the savings right away!

Your revenue is earned by transporting Uber’s worldwide network of riders in your fleet of cars and also referral revenue for new drivers you have added to the Uber network.

Your revenue, as you know, is calculated using the distance driven and the time spent waiting, or actively transporting the customer (such as waiting in traffic). Although Uber does report these earnings to you, it is the responsibility of every owner to confirm the miles drives and time spent on a ride. Would you pay a service person who worked on your home without knowing the work they did? No, you wouldn’t. Well, the same goes for your business. For this same reason you must track, for every car and driver, their mileage, fueling, time waiting and time performing rides.

There are several tools to help make this process easy and verifiable. Have a high quality GPS tracker installed on your car that tracks time, routes, and enough distance to include your entire transportation service area. In addition to using a GPS tracker, also verify the information yourself by reading the odometer (checked-in and checked-out miles) with your own eyes. There can never be enough checks and balances to be sure you are being paid accurately for the work of your cars and drivers!

We recommend reviewing the data from each car’s dash panel (2ce a month) to check on the car’s health, and also the mileage since your last check. After getting your revenue summary from Uber, use the dash panel information to provide your first revenue validation (a comparison of miles driven vs. miles billed)

Next, verify those first two data points (checked-in and checked-out miles) against the data provided by the GPS tracker installed on your car. Now you have more information further verifying the accuracy of your data.

In our uberkit(s) we provide you with tracking options for the driver and suggest you use both a physically written method, as well as any number of downloadable driver assistant apps that track time, location and distance of a given shift. Now you have the information you need to analyze your revenue, and contact the company or your drivers to settle any discrepancies.

Ensure you have revenue goals (per mile) for your car(s) so that this data has meaning. This will help determine how you are progressing toward your weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual profit/ROI (return on investment) goals!
