Uber In Southeast Asia Exits; Sells to Grab

Uber’s strategy took a surprising shift when the company announced in March 2018 that it will be exiting Southeast Asia.  The rideshare giant will be selling its stake in the region to Singapore based, Grab signaling the end of Uber in Southeast Asia.

This isn’t the first time Uber will be surrendering to competition when faced with tough opposition. In August 2016, Uber’s former CEO, Travis Kalanick issued a statement on his Facebook page confirming news that Uber’s China Business will be uncharacteristically merging with Didi chuxing, a Chinese ridesharing giant. This was an unprecedented move as Uber is known worldwide for its aggressive territorial stance in countries where it operates.

Citing reasons behind the merger, Travis stated, “Sustainably serving China’s cities, the riders and drivers who live in them is only possible with profitability. This merger paves the way for our team and Didi’s to partner on an enormous mission, and it frees up a substantial resources for bold initiatives focused on the future of cities — from self-driving technology to the future of food and logistics.”

Now, Uber will be exiting 8 cities in Southeast Asia: Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanma and Cambodia.

Uber stated it won’t receive any cash from the sale. The company “will get a 27.5% stake in the combined company. Around 500 colleagues across the region will transition to Grab, and over the coming weeks we will help our customers move to Grab’s apps” Uber’s current CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement issued on the company’s websiteUber In Southeast Asia

What This Means

Southeast Asia is the third market Uber will be exiting after facing strong competition. This has prompted people to ask if Uber is shedding weight and going light. The company is known for dominating new markets even if there is strong opposition and these recent moves are a clear departure from Uber’s strategy.

To shed more light on this, Khosrowshahi said “One of the potential dangers of our global strategy is that we take on too many battles across too many fronts and with too many competitors… going forward we will be focused on organic growth—growth that comes from building the best products, services and technology in the world, and re-building our brand into the mobility brand that riders, cities and drivers want to support and partner with.”

What we Think

This is a wise move by Uber in Southeast Asia. Why expend resources in markets that are generating no profits and are clearly dominated by stronger opposition? If you stand to gain more by selling off struggling operations and making strong partnerships, then by all means do so. Grab has a stronger hold in Southeast Asia where its food delivery, car pooling, cashless payments and bike share services are available in 191 cities. Uber in Southeast Asia didn’t seem like a profitable business in the long run thus, prompting this shocking exit. UberEATS and Uber’s ridehailing services will now be available on Grab’s app.

Advance Booking – Improve Your Uber Experience

The Uber app comes pre-equipped with so many features designed to create the ultimate riding experience for passengers. With features like “driver ETA” and “share your trip details with loved ones”, the Uber app has enough features to ensure riders have a satisfactory trip. The Uber app helps passengers request rides from the comfort of any location as long as there is access to the internet. Uber riders place a request through the Uber app and get matched with registered Uber drivers who pick them up right at their doorsteps or a pre-determined location.

When riders demanded more functionality from the Uber app, Uber introduced the advance booking option. Now, Uber riders in certain cities can schedule Uber ahead. This Uber advance booking option brought tremendous improvements to the Uber app. Now, you can schedule a ride up to 30 days ahead. At the start of the week or month, you can schedule all your rides ahead on your Uber app.

In some cities, riders will find that the Uber advance booking option is unavailable. This just means the feature is not available in your city. To bridge the gap, the Kommen app was created.

What is Kommen?

Uber advance booking option is mostly used by busy people to settle their transportation needs while they focus on other important parts of their lives. Since this feature is only available in select Uber markets, the Kommen app was created to allow Uber users all over the world schedule their rides in advance. So, if Uber is available in your city, Kommen will be available as well to help you schedule a ride ahead. Since Kommen syncs with the Uber app to provide the ultimate Uber experience, the Kommen app is also certainly for everyone.

So how does Kommen work?

The Kommen app is an online platform where Uber riders can schedule rides ahead if Uber operates within that city. In every city Uber operates in, Kommen will let app users schedule Uber 15minutes to 30 days in advance. You can cancel your scheduled ride up to 5 minutes after the ride is on the way to pick you up without attracting any cancellation fee. Advance Booking

The Kommen app is a third party app designed to act as your reliable Uber companion. The Kommen app will not call you an Uber if the ride is surging. Once the surge is over, the app will call you a ride. To use Kommen, follow the steps below:

  • Log in with your Uber Passenger Account to into the Kommen app
  • You only need to log in once. You also only need to provide us permissions to request Uber rides on your behalf (once), and that is it.
  • Select your Pickup Date and Time
  • Let us know when you want your Uber, and we will request your Uber in enough time for you to make your trip on schedule.
  • Select your Pickup Address
  • Let us know where you want your Uber to get you, and we will send your Uber there.
  • Wait for your Uber
  • We will notify you when your Uber is arriving.

How to Get Kommen

Kommen is currently available for download on Google Play Store. At the moment, the app is only available on Android, but plans are afoot to launch our iOS App in not time. You can choose to get notified once our iPhone app is released by clicking the ‘notify me’ button of the page. To learn how to use the Kommen app after download, please visit here

More About Uber Real Time ID Check

Uber has come under fire in the past due to its perceived “relaxed” security policies when registering drivers on the Uber platform. In Austin, the issue of finger-printing drivers prompted Uber to halt its operations in Austin, Texas. Uber argued that requiring drivers to be fingerprinted as part of criminal background checks would hamper their seamless registration process. In an interview reported by CNN’s Heather Kelly, Uber’s former CEO, Kalanick, tried as much as possible to explain why fingerprinting would not be fair on Uber drivers and the Uber sign up process as a whole. Apart from the cost implication, the amount of time it takes to get through the process is also a big problem.

Kalanick also stated that by using fairer background check methods, Uber opens the chance for more people who have previous arrest records to work as independent contractors.

Now, Uber has introduced the Uber Real Time ID Check to beef up the apps’s security. This new feature was created to make riders feel more at ease and also prevent driver fraud.

What is Uber Real Time ID Check?

This is simply a facial recognition ID approval system for drivers. Uber drivers will be required to take selfies before they login into the driver app and start accepting rides. According to the Uber website, the company is proud to announce that Uber Real Time ID Check, Uber’s latest security feature which uses Microsoft Cognitive Services to protect both riders and drivers, is now live.

This feature will ensure that riders are picked up by the right drivers as they can now check if the selfie taken by the driver matches their picture on file.

Also, driver accounts are protected from fraud or being compromised. This extra layer of security is a great addition to the Uber business model.

Uber Real Time ID Check

How It Works

  • Drivers are asked periodically to take a selfie in the Uber app before they accept rides.
  • Uber will then use Microsoft’s Cognitive Services to immediately compare the selfie to the one corresponding with the account on file.
  • If both photos don’t match, the account is temporarily blocked and Uber will look into the situation.

Uber’s simplified way of doing business has been emulated by many start-up companies. The model seems to work as evidenced by the company’s growth over the years. However, Uber has faced bans in many cities as governing bodies in these cities feel Uber can employ stricter policies while registering new drivers. Hopefully, with this extra precaution introduced by Uber, the rideshare giant can receive warmer reception in these cities.

Riders can feel more relaxed knowing that they don’t have to worry about being picked up by sketchy characters. Also, Uber driver accounts are protected from being hacked.

This feature has been rolled out in the U.S and other countries around the world like Singapore, Malaysia and India. We hope to see it spread even further.

Car rentals are a life saver. They are very handy when you are visiting new cities and want the luxury of traveling at your own schedule. When you have a car at your disposal, you have the independence to visit all the places you want to see without paying exorbitant taxi fares. Choosing car rentals will involve renting a car from car rental companies or using ride-share services like Uber. With rideshare services, you have a car and a driver at your disposal to take you to your specified location. If you need another ride, you will have to place another request through the rideshare app. With car rental companies, you have the car for the entire specified period. You are both driver and passenger. When choosing a car rental company, you have to take the following into consideration:

  • Company presence (How many states and countries do they have presence in?)
  • Vehicle options available (vehicle options to choose from)
  • Value added services and others (insurance, vehicles with disability assistance, online booking/cancellation, GPS, car seats for kids)

Choosing a car rental company with an international presence comes with a lot of perks. They offer different vehicle options to choose from. Value added services like insurance, vehicles with disability assistance, online booking/cancellation, GPS, and car seats for kids. HopIn Taxi takes on Uber in South Africa

There is no doubt that Uber continues to dominate the rideshare industry in most markets all over the world. As the app based taxi service continues to grow aggressively, other rideshare startups are trying to compete as well. Today, we will look at another budding startup seeking to compete with Uber in South Africa.

More about HOPIN Taxi

HOPIN taxi is an app-based ridehailing service like Uber. This app first launched in Slovakia in 2012 at a time when rideshare was still a novel concept in the city. HOPIN taxi in Slovakia services over 250,000 passengers daily. The service has since spread to the Czech Republic and is aiming to launch operations in South Africa. Uber launched in Africa in 2012 beginning with Johannesburg and has since spread its operations into 14 African cities including Lagos, Dar Es Salaam and Pretoria.

HOPIN taxi operates just like Uber; you can

  • Choose the type of taxi you need.
  • Look through a history of your rides in-app
  • Rate your experience from the ride with the driver. Compliment the driver if you were satisfied.
  • Customers are notified upon driver’s arrival
  • Add your card to your HOPIN account and pay for your taxi through direct debit or with cash.
  • In-app price calculator

However, there are a few exceptions; unlike Uber where customers do not get to demand that their drivers have certain characteristics, HOPIN allows passengers to select the gender of the driver. Also, users can specify if they’ll be travelling with kids or with a pet.

How HOPIN works

To use Hopin taxi, follow the steps below:

  • Download the Hopin app on Android or Itunes
  • Confirm your location or choose a different location where the taxi is supposed to come pick you up. You immediately see the available taxis and its details.
  • Select a taxi from the options available. You can choose the cheapest, nearest taxi or one with the best ranking. Set your own search preferences, or simply select your favorite taxi.
  • Then place an order for a taxi.
  • You can see it approaching you on the map.
  • Step out when your taxi arrives.

Uber in South Africa is still thriving and has incorporated other Uber services like UberRUSH and UberEATS. With UberRUSH, users should expect to have a personal courier service that lets them get their parcels delivered within minutes. With UberEATS service, having food delivered is about to get even easier. The service will erase the extra stress that going out to get your meal would cost you. You will be able to order your favorite meal and have them delivered just when you want it. This will greatly improve Uber’s stance in South Africa and competitors must be willing to bring more to the table besides ridesharing.

Get A Car For Your Uber Business

Uber is the pioneer technology-based ridesharing platform that connects passengers with pre-registered drivers via the Uber app. The Uber business model is designed to empower entrepreneurs who want to register on the Uber app as an Uber driver or partner. With its global presence, Uber has a large network of cars listed on the platform. Also, anyone with driving expertise and a car that meets the company’s requirements can register as an Uber partner or driver.

However, you do not have to own a car to enroll on the Uber platform. If you are considering getting a car for your Uber business, there are a couple of ways to go about this. Getting a car for your Uber business requires some financial commitment. There are also some risks involved. The options available for getting a car to use on the Uber platform depends on your budget and how flexible you want to be as an Uber driver. Depending on your preferences, here are a few options for getting a car for your Uber business. Uber Business

Buying a Vehicle

Buying a car will mean making 100 percent payment before owning the car. This option is a huge financial commitment and deciding on the type of car depends on the Uber service you wish to offer and your budget. It is important to note that Uber has various services which require different types of vehicles. You should decide on which of the services you are interested in before buying a car. Your car will be rejected if it has major cosmetic damage or it is salvaged (was involved in a major accident and had to be fixed with parts from other vehicles or rebuilt). There might be some extra requirements (besides the general) depending on the type of Uber service you choose.

Many people tend to invest in a new car before driving professionally with Uber. This isn’t a bad idea if you have the funds. However, if you want to buy a car for your Uber business, it is important to know that you will have to bear the cost of car related expenses like fuel, car maintenance, insurance costs, car depreciation, Uber royalties and other maintenance related expenses.

Uber Rental Options

These Uber rental car options were created to help intending and existing Uber drivers. To apply for these rental options, you should know that you have to first sign up to become an Uber driver. Please see Uber rental car options below:

Uber -Enterprise Rental

Uber in partnership with Enterprise is offering weekly rentals to drivers at $210/week and a non-refundable $40 quick start fee. Drivers are given a minimum rental of 1 week and if both Enterprise and Uber approve of you, you get to keep the vehicle for longer. There is no mileage cap and vehicle maintenance is done by vehicle manufacturer. You can visit here to learn more about this option.

Drivers have access to cars like Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra, Chevy Cruze, Ford Focus, Dodge Dart, and Honda Civic.

Uber-Hertz Rental Partnership

This option was born out of the Hertz-Uber Deal. This also provides rental solutions for drivers who need it. Drivers in Los Angeles will be allowed to rent cars from certain off-airport Hertz locations. The deal could be expanded to other areas in the United States and as time goes on, may become a country-wide partnership.

Hertz has made it known that the cars can be used by Uber drivers at any time – whether it’s for personal or rideshare business. Hertz reached a similar agreement with Lyft in 2015 and that partnership saw Lyft drivers in Las Vegas and Denver renting cars from Hertz to use for their businesses.

  • Drivers have to pay $180/week, taxes and fees inclusive
  • Drivers have to pay a $250 refundable deposit.
  • Unlimited mileage
  • Maintenance costs are covered by Hertz.
  • Drivers have 7 days minimum, 28 days max.

Vehicle Types

Toyota Corolla

Other Rentals

HyreCar is a vehicle rental market, designed for all on-demand services. With this service, you get BMWs, Prius, and Minivans which are mainly put up by private car owners who want to earn money with their cars when they aren’t driving it. This is a note to drivers who want to keep earning money even when they are not driving Uber passengers themselves.

This service allows drivers to switch between Uber services by renting different types of cars probably to test the different Uber services or to use in certain areas where they are more requests under that service. You can subscribe to the daily, weekly, or monthly plan and terms like rates and mileageare largely controlled by the car owner.

This option is available for drivers in South Africa. Uber’s partnership with Wesbank in South Africa has proven to be an avenue for Uber drivers to become entrepreneurs. Simply, this strategic partnership allows Uber drivers who do not qualify for traditional loans to obtain a full vehicle maintenance lease issued by Wesbank at discount rates.

For exisiting Uber drivers

Instead of focusing on the driver’s credit ratings, drivers will be approved for the vehicle leasing program based on their record with Uber and their earnings. Any driver who has been on the Uber platform for a while can get the chance to be their own boss.

For new drivers

Car rentals companies will also be offering those interested in joining the Uber platform a chance to rent approved cars to use on the platform. According to Wesbank, drivers can have access to short term rentals from the following car rental companies: Hertz, Europcar, Pace and Fleet Data Technologies. This offer is available until the driver has built a record and the earnings required to be approved for the Uber Wesbank Vehicle leasing program.

Driving for Fleet Owners

You can have more than one car registered on the Uber platform; this will qualify you as an Uber fleet owner. You can have more than one car registered on the Uber platform; this will qualify you as an Uber fleet owner. Uber fleet owners have vehicles registered on the Uber platform but do not drive for Uber. Rather, Uber drivers can indicate interest to drive for Uber fleet owners. Sign up to become an Uber driver and Uber will link you with a fleet owner. This way, you do not bear the responsibilities that come with owning a car and all you do is drive and get paid by the Uber fleet owner.

Our Uberkits were crafted with the Uber partner program and Uber drivers in mind. For Uber Drivers and Entrepreneurs who are looking to do proper due diligence before acquiring a car and want to assess the profitability of Uber as a business whether as a one man business (a sole Uber driver), or as an Entrepreneur with multiple Uber cars in his/her fleet, then you might just need to check out either of our Uber Kits at the top right of the linked pages below:

Tips For Uber Passenger Safety

Uber as a pioneer in ridesharing has become a preferred means of transportation for many. Uber drivers and Uber passengers who have signed up to use the Uber service are matched once a ride request is placed. This makes Uber  a middleman between these two parties. Uber, in its bid to protect both parties created a plethora of in-app features to protect passengers and drivers. Also, background checks are carried out by the rideshare giant on its drivers.  However, the Uber service is not devoid of loopholes. Passengers have to be at alert all the time. This post was created to share some Uber passenger safety tips.

Rape and assault cases have been brought against various Uber drivers around the world. In 2017, an Uber passenger in Virginia was abducted and sexually assaulted by an Uber driver after he picked her up. In California, an unconscious teenage girl was raped by an Uber driver a few feet from her home and was discovered by concerned relatives who used the tracking feature to locate the Uber.  An Indian Uber driver was arrested for raping a female passenger in December, of 2014.  Uber Passenger Safety

Despite the perks of patronizing Uber’s services and how easy the service has made transportation, it is particularly important for passengers to be vigilant during trips and also to take advantage of all the Uber app safety features.  Below are some tips to ensure Uber passenger safety:

Tips For Uber Passenger Safety

Verify Your Driver and Vehicle details on the Uber app

The driver’s first name, photo, license plate number, picture of the vehicle and their driver’s rating is shown to every rider once a ride request is successfully placed. With this, passengers will be unlikely to fall victim to fake drivers.

Once the driver is outside, it is important to verify the car details and the driver should identify you by name and vice versa.

Request Your Ride and Wait Indoors

There is no point waiting outside for your Uber cab to arrive. This can make you anxious and a target for fake drivers. Wait indoors till the Uber app notifies you of the driver’s arrival.

Share Trip Details with Loved Ones

Uber has provided a feature within the app that allows riders share their trip details with loved ones. Details like ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) and route can be seen by whomever the trip is shared with. Hence, someone other than yourself can keep an eye on you during the trip and monitor your progress till you arrive at your destination. While en route, tap “Share status” in the app to share your driver’s name, photo, license plate, and location with a friend or family member. They can see all these details without downloading the Uber app.

Seat at the Backseat

This helps create some personal space between you and the driver. This also makes it easier for you to exit the car when you want to.

Trust your Instincts

If something doesn’t feel right, just make your excuses and exit the vehicle. It’s better to be safe than sorry.  If during the ride you feel threatened in any way, call 911 immediately.

Overall, Uber has tried to help passengers feel safe by providing in app safety features. However, human resources can be really difficult to control or manage. The onus lies on all passengers to exhibit caution and stay alert before using an Uber.

Uber Payment Options For Drivers and Passengers

Uber has made transportation easier and more convenient, it is quickly becoming the sought after option. Driving with Uber is one way you can earn more money.  It affords flexible hours and a chance to make good money on your own schedule. With Uber drivers, you can be rest assured of professional service as drivers try to keep up their ratings. Also, Uber drivers can be reported and terminated from the service if there are passenger reports of misconduct on the part of the drivers.

With the Uber app, ride requests have been simplified for riders and drivers. Uber drivers are matched with passengers once requests are placed. Payments can also be effected via the app. In this post, we will discuss Uber payment options for both passengers and drivers.

Uber payment options

Uber passengers get a fare estimate before even starting a ride. This helps them decide if to go on with the ride or cancel the ride request. This fare estimate is shown to the rider before completing the ride request process on the Uber app. Passengers pay for the rides via the credit or debit cards tied to their Uber accounts. Some markets like Nigeria and India allow passengers pay for rides using cash.

For drivers, Uber credits their accounts at the end of the week after deducting commissions. So, how exactly does this work?

Uber Payment Options for Drivers

First let’s review how driver earnings are calculated:

Your final pay at the end of the day depends on some factors:

  • Trip fare – This is calculated based on the time and distance of the trip
  • Commission – How much commission Uber takes off each ride fare
  • Booking fee – Uber collects this from the rider on your behalf. This is used to cover the costs of insurance and safety features. It doesn’t affect your fare
  • Tolls – If you had to pay toll at any point during the ride.

Your earning per ride = Trip fare + Tolls

Drivers have 2 Uber payment options:

  1. Direct Deposits – This happens every Thursday via direct deposits straight into your bank account.
  2. Uber Instant Pay – With the use of your personal debit card, the Uber Instant Pay option allows you to cash out up to 5 times a day. However, you are charged $0.50 for every time you cash out. Also, most Mastercard, Visa or Discover U.S. debit cards associated with traditional checking and savings accounts are accepted when you use them on Instant Pay. Instant Pay allows drivers to cash out their earnings on demand (instead of waiting a full week!). The program disburses funds upon the driver’s request and has no minimum cash-out amount.

You can also request an Uber debit card that links to a business account setup through Uber’s partnership with GoBank. Disbursing to the GoBank card does not incur a $0.50 fee; however it involves all of the responsibilities that come with having a checking account. Visit the nearest Uber office to you to find out if this option is available in your state.

For passengers, the Uber app strives to make transportation as seamless as possible to make the process easy for riders.

Uber as a business is quite flexible and lucrative. It gives car owners opportunities to make money using their personal vehicles at their own convenience. You can easily join the Uber business by clicking this link.

More About Volkswagen’s Rideshare Company- MOIA

Uber’s success story has elicited different responses from automakers. Some car companies reacted by throwing their weight behind Uber’s competitors while others launched their own ride-hailing service to compete with Uber in the rideshare industry.

In May of 2016, auto giant Toyota announced that it would be entering a partnership with Uber. Uber and Toyota would work on creating new leasing options that would allow Uber drivers lease vehicles with Toyota Financial Services providing financing to these MOIAdrivers.  General Motors founded its own car-sharing service, Maven. The company also plowed half a billion dollars into Uber’s rival company – Lyft. Another rideshare startup- Gett, was a recipient of $300 million investment from automaker Volkswagen. Now, Volkswagen is all set to launch a mobility service called MOIA. The auto giant officially launched MOIA in December of 2016.

More About MOIA

MOIA was launched as an independent company of the Volkswagen Group. The company was created to target transportation issues in urban cities. According to the company’s website, MOIA “will develop and offer an extensive portfolio of on-demand mobility services that make the lives of people living in urban areas better, cleaner and safer.”

MOIA is tasked with “the in-house development of IT-based on-demand offerings such as ridehailing and ridepooling services” and will be based in Berlin, Hamburg and Helsinki. The company hopes to redefine the face of mobility services and become an industry leader by 2025

In the face of existing competitors like Uber and Lyft, it is apparent that Volkswagen has a lot of hurdles to cross. Uber is continually seeking ways of meeting passenger needs. The company is known for its aggressive stance while dominating new territories. Not only that, Uber tailors services to match markets. A typical example is the UberMOTO in Bangladesh. This motorcycle service will help commuters navigate through the city’s famous traffic in record time.

So, how does MOIA hope to achieve set targets?

  • specifically investing in digital startups
  • collaborating with cities
  • Partnering with established transport providers.

The aim of the new company is to develop and offer an extensive portfolio of on-demand mobility services. This can clearly be achieved by aligning forces with the parties mentioned above. By investing 300 million dollars in the cab hailing service- Gett, it is apparent that MOIA is well on its way to providing mobility for all. In its media page, MOIA’s CEO Ole Harms stated that, “Together with Gett we are pursuing a clearly defined expansion strategy in Europe – only recently, three of the Group’s brands launched the first joint initiative with attractive vehicle packages for Gett drivers in the growth market of Moscow. Further markets will follow soon.”

MOIA is pursuing creating a pooling business like Uber and just like Uber, on-demand services will be carried out via an app.

We are looking forward to more innovations from MOIA.
