UberEverything In Africa

Uber launched operations in Africa beginning with the city of Johannesburg in August 2013. Now it operates in over 10 African cities including Cape Town, Abuja and Kampala. Uber in Abuja, Nigeria happened to be the company’s 400th city signifying Uber’s relentless growth around the world. This has made the company comfortable enough to plan its growth on an even larger scale.

As reported by QZ: “Having nearly perfected the business of moving people around on the continent, Uber is set to diversify the core of its business in sub Saharan Africa with the introduction of UberEverything, a division of the company with ambitious plans to plug its existing drivers network into the on-demand economy and provide services such as product and food delivery and courier services.”

What is UberEverything?

UberEverything can be used to define all Uber’s possible business endeavors in the long term.UberEverything It seems Uber plans to meet every need possible with UberEverything. Jason Droege, Head of the UberEverything Division, confirmed our assertion when he told the Los Angeles Times: “everything we’re building is on top of a platform that already exists,”

To be more precise, UberEverything will be made up of UberRUSH, Uber’s version of a personal courier service; and UberEATS– a food delivery service. According to Uber’s General Manager for sub-Saharan Africa, Alon Lits, UberEverything will pilot in South Africa by the end of 2016.

UberEveryting and Possiblities

“The first market will probably be South Africa and we are pushing to make that happen before the end of the year,” said Alon Lits, Uber’s General manager for sub-Saharan Africa. With UberRUSH, users should expect to have a personal courier service that lets them get their parcels delivered within minutes. With UberEATS service, having food delivered is about to get even easier. The service will erase the extra stress that going out to get your meal would cost you. You will be able to order your favourite meal and have them delivered just when you want it.

“If things go well in South Africa, there’s no reason why we won’t bring UberEverything to more markets. One of such markets will likely be Lagos,” Lits says. Nigeria, with its teeming population seems like an optimal option. Despite the economic instability in the country, certain cities like Abuja and Lagos continue to thrive against all odds.

We look forward to the launch of these Uber services in other African cities.

Uber in Africa: Company’s Expansion and What this Means

Uber Technologies Inc. is well known for its aggressive mode of taking over territories. The company has operations in over 500 cities across 81 countries of the world. Uber’s die-hard attitude towards expansion and its ability to be at loggerheads with resisting governments could be why it remains an industry leader today. Uber in Africa is proving to be a formidable force.  The company continues to enjoy rapid growth in major Africa cities. Uber launched in Africa in 2012 beginning with Johannesburg. The company has since spread its operations into 14  African cities including Lagos, Dar Es Salaam and Pretoria.

This doesn’t mean the ride share giant has enjoyed smooth sailing while increasing its global foot print in Africa. Local taxi drivers have expressed both verbal and physical displeasure at Uber’s growing popularity in Africa. Uber drivers in Kenya and South Africa have faced abuse in the hands of local taxi drivers. This setbacks have only spurred Uber on as the company continues to seek ways to attract more riders onto its platform.

Besides providing alternative means of transport for Africans and empowering willing drivers, Uber will also introduce some of its other popular services like
Uber in AfricaUberEATS, UberRUSH and UberPOOL. This was revealed by Alon Lits- General Manager of Uber in Sub-Saharan Africa to YPO about Uber’s expansion plans.

It is equally important to note that unemployment is a big problem in most African countries.  By launching Uber in Africa, the company will provide job opportunities to thousands of people.

Despite some of the opposition Uber has faced in Africa, there aren’t key competitors who operate exactly the same way as Uber does in Africa. Other companies such as Snappcab in South Africa and Taxify which launched in Cape Town and Nigeria are struggling to meet up. Uber continues to enjoy unparalleled success in Africa by revolutionizing the Taxi industry.  Uber in AfricaWhile trying to increase rider patronage, Uber in Africa slashed fares in Kenya to make its services more attractive to consumers. This move met with retaliation from Uber drivers who decided to protest what they felt was unfair. The disgruntled drivers went on strike in August of 2016 protesting the 35 percent cut in prices introduced by the ride-hailing service in East Africa’s largest economy. However, Uber has since resumed operations in Kenya and continues to battle it out with home grown competitor- Little launched by Safaricom.

While touting the progress made so far by Uber in Africa, Lits reported that: “In 2014, we had a million trips booked, during the first six months of 2015 two million trips were booked, and we have seen the trend continue.”

African countries are known for their warm reception of foreign investors who try to empower their citizens. The market is welcoming and with the government ready to support foreign investment, it means even easier operations for Uber.

We look forward to other success stories as Uber in Africa continues to make its way around the continent one city at a time.

Uber in Canada: How Ottawa Legalized Ride Sharing

Amidst what has quickly become a fierce battle against the norm, Uber continues to thrive and and remains an industry leader in ride sharing. In a world where taxi monopoly was a secret pipeline for exploitation, Uber revolutionized the taxi landscape by creating a seamless and cheaper alternative. Due to this intrusion in the taxi industry, cabbies are struggling to find their footing as ride sharing is fast becoming the preferred option. Uber and its other cohorts provide a cheaper alternative to local taxi services.

In many countries, Uber has met with daunting obstacles as local cabbies fight to have the service outlawed and banned whenever they launch. However, concerned city authorities recognize the importance and benefits of ridesharing and seek to implement rules that facilitate Uber’s operation in their respective cities. Uber in Canada has just received the go-ahead to operate legally in the city of Ottawa.

Ottawa’s contribution

After operating illegally for over 2 years in Ottawa, Uber in Canada received approval from Ottawa city authorities to launch operations legally in 2017. Ottawa has now joined the list of progressive cities that seek to revolutionize the taxi industry. A committee made up of Ottawa council men, taxi drivers and ride sharing representatives met in 2016 to debate the need to make changes in the Ottawa taxi industry.  Uber in Canada

CBC news reported that the City of Ottawa passed new “vehicle-for-hire regulations” — the first jurisdiction in Ontario to do so — to bring ride-hailing services like Uber in line with the city’s taxi bylaws. A city committee approved a raft of recommendations aimed at reforming the taxi industry. Some of these recommendations included that vehicles used for services like Uber will not need to equip their cabs with cameras.

“It is clear the taxi industry needs to change. Change is never easy. The industry needs fewer regulations and more competition,” Deans said. “The public demanded change. The public demanded greater choice. The public is counting on us to get this right,” said Coun. Diane Deans, chair of the City of Ottawa’s community and protective services committee

Other changes made include:

  • Eliminating the $1.50 service fee for customers paying with credit and debit in taxis.
  • Eliminating the $820 Algonquin College taxi course for drivers.
  • Reducing the taxi licence fee by 40 per cent, and eliminating it altogether for drivers of accessible taxis.
  • Maintain the exclusive right for taxis to accept street hails and use taxi lanes.
  • Allowing taxi drivers to offer reduced fares, but only when pre-arranged through an app. The city will not regulate Uber’s pricing.
  • Vehicles in both licensing categories can be a maximum of 10 years old.

Companies like Uber would be categorized as Private Transportation Companies. The service would also operate on a ‘buyers beware’ type of structure.

Ottawa taxi drivers are angered by this recent development as they fear that the value of their city-issued permits will plummet.

What does this mean for Uber?

Uber in Canada is bent on following all recommendations made by Ottawa’s city authorities. With Ottawa taking the lead in legalizing ride sharing, other cities like Toronto will be making similar moves as well. This is a breakthrough for Uber as its continues to make its way round the world one city at a time. It remains to be seen how quickly other Canadian cities will implement these changes as well.

Top 4 Uber Challenges In Big Cities

Uber Challenges

As we know, Uber has gained quite a reputation as a revolutionary in the transportation sector by creating seamless travel (front-door pickups) by de-congesting roads through ride-sharing. With different product offerings that satisfy various customer needs, Uber is fast becoming a household name. Despite these giant strides, Uber remains at loggerheads with state governments in big cities around the worlds such as Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Austin and Pennsylvania over a number of issues.

In this post, we outlined top Uber challenges in big cities and how they are preventing the ridesharing firm from reaching fair agreements with the state governments of these big cities.

  • LEVEL PLAYING FIELD

The traditional taxi industry in some of these states complained that Uber‘s mode of operation creates an uneven playing field for all players in the taxi industry. Since the advent of Uber in 2009, a huge share of the market in many cities gravitated towards tech based ride-sharing. Taxi companies have cried foul leaving the state and local lawmakers struggling with how best to respond. “Should regulations on taxis be relaxed?” Schaller asks (a worker for New York City’s Department of Transportation). “Should some of the regulations that apply to cabs be extended to transportation network companies?” Aside from a handful of cities, there are wide disparities in regulations for taxis and ride-hailing apps in most major jurisdictions.

  • FINGERPRINTING DRIVERSUber Challenges

The issue of finger-printing drivers prompted Uber to halt its operations in Austin, Texas. They argued that requiring drivers to be fingerprinted as part of criminal background checks would hamper their seamless registration process. In an interview reported by CNN’s Heather KellyUber’s CEO, Kalanick, tried as much as possible to explain why fingerprinting would not be fair on Uber drivers and the Uber sign up process as a whole. Apart from the cost affiliated with the process, the amount of time it takes to get through the process is also a big problem.

Kalanick also stated that by using fairer background check methods, Uber opens the chance for more people who have previous arrest records to work as independent contractors. This also has a lot to do with getting justice for people who have been unfairly snared in the U.S. criminal justice system by giving them an opportunity to earn as much as they are willing to work. All these will not be possible if drivers are fingerprinted.

  • WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY

Uber has pushed back against requirements that mandate that a certain percentage of its fleet should be accessible to riders in wheelchairs, arguing that majority of their drivers are using their personal cars. Accessibility advocates have proven to be Uber’s loudest critics. In New York, they took credit for blocking a bill that would legalize ride-hailing in upstate and Long Island but Uber continues to resist their efforts. Nonetheless, Uber launched a service called UberWAV that makes sure wheelchair users can commute in an easy manner by providing vehicles that are wheelchair accessible.

  • CLASSIFICATION OF DRIVERS

Uber just settled a class action lawsuit that was seeking to re-classify Uber drivers as employees rather than independent contractors.  As mentioned in this article, “Uber classifies its drivers as independent contractors [or self employed individuals]”.  As reported by Recode.net, this settlement agreed to a number of concessions that includes “Uber’s agreement to help facilitate the formation of two driver-based groups: An appeal panel and a union-like driver association.” However, it is left to be seen if Uber will keep to the terms of the agreement or if this is a ploy to get the drivers off its back.

In conclusion, smaller cities have fewer regulations than big cities but also have less patronage. Though it is not easy to conquer big cities, the result in terms of business growth will be worth it on the long run.  Uber needs a steady supply of drivers to maintain its meteoric growth rate before the integration of autonomous cars into its plethora of services.
