How to Become an Uber Driver in India

Driving an Uber is quickly becoming one of the quickest and easiest ways to make extra money. However, many people are unsure of how they can become an Uber driver in countries other than the U.S, e.g. in India. If you are considering Uber in any city (in India) where Uber is available, then this blog post is for you- i.e.: AHMEDABAD, BANGALORE, MUMBAI, KOLKATA, CHANDIGARH, HYDERABAD, NEW DELHI, CHENNAI, INDORE, JAIPUR, KOCHI, BHUBANESWAR, NAGPUR, PUNE, SURAT, MYSORE, and VISAKHAPATNAM.

Fortunately, it isn’t as complicated a process as you would think. Let’s go over the steps you will need to take to successfully become an Uber driver in India-

STEP 1 – Get your Documents Ready

First of all, you will need to prepare a few documents that are essential for you to have before you become an Uber driver. These documents include:

  • A Driver’s License
  • A Delhi PSV badge or up-to-date Police Verification.
  • An RC – Registration Certificate (if you already have a car, else see STEP3)
  • Two NOCs. In case you are wondering what an NOC is – An NOC is a No Objection Certificate -“A legal certificate issued by any agency, organization, institute or in certain cases, an individual, that does not object to the covenants of the certificate”
  • A Canceled Cheque.

STEP 2 – Signup Online

Once you have all of these documents, the next step is to sign up through the Uber website – using our link: www.uberkit.net/signup. (You get a signup bonus if you use our link, which has our signup referral code already pre-populated).

STEP 3 – Get an Uber Approved CarHow to Become an Uber Driver in India Image

As for the vehicle to use, you need to make sure it fits the car requirements specifically for Uber drivers in India (or your specific city). Note – Uber has various services, so you should know which service you are interested in before buying a car (if you do not have one). See the section below on Selecting an Uber Service for more information on that. Some of these requirements include the fact that the car should be no older than 5 years  (A model 2010 or later). The car should also have passed a full vehicle inspection and have no major cosmetic damage.

In addition to the afore-mentioned, having your full name printed on the insurance of the vehicle is also required.

Salvaged or rebuilt vehicles cannot be used, and full-size vans or marked vehicles such as taxis are a no-no, too.

Once you attach your vehicle to Uber, you will receive a mobile device with the pre-installed Uber application so that you can receive clients/passengers that need to be driven.

What to Do if Your Vehicle Does Not Fit Uber Requirements

Keep in mind, there is no need to give up, if your personal vehicle does not fit the requirements that are necessary for an Uber vehicle—in fact, many people tend to invest in a new car before becoming professional Uber drivers.

However, I would recommend not going overboard when you are purchasing a new car to be used as an Uber vehicle. It is a good idea to select an average but sturdy car that is not a particularly new or fancy model but fits Uber’s car requirements. Note – See the Nice to Know section for due diligence you should probably do, before buying a car specifically for Uber.

Selecting an Uber Service

Another thing to keep in mind when you are selecting a car is which category of Uber you wish to work under.

UberX is the mid-tier cost Uber service, and it also gets the most patronage from Uber passengers across the globe for this reason. This is the category I would recommend starting out with.UberX requires an everyday car such as a Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, Mazda3 or Mazda6, Honda Civic, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Cruz, etc. Note- there is a service called UberGO, but for the purposes of this blog post we will not go into it (UberGO was created to challenge the autorickshaw transportation industry).

However, if you want to go for one of the more luxurious categories which has higher fares but fewer customers, then you can also go for UberXL, UberBLACK or UberSUV. Just keep in mind that these services require more expensive cars and are not as frequently used by the public.

If your car happens to qualify for more than one type of Uber service, then it is possible that you will get requests from several categories, but you can choose to restrict yourself to one category if that is what you want. Personally, I believe that it would be best to accept all the requests, in this case, as it will earn you a higher income.

Nice to Know

If you wish to become an Uber driver in India, it is necessary to be aware of the fact that you will be forking over a certain amount of money to pay for gas. If, for example, you earn approximately 1.2 lakhs a month, you will spend about 29,000 Indian rupees (around $440) on gas every month out of that money.

In addition to the afore-mentioned you have other costs like car maintenance, insurance costs, car depreciation, and uber royalties. If you are looking to do proper due diligence before acquiring a car and want to assess the profitability of Uber as a business whether as a one man business (a sole Uber driver), or as an Entrepreneur with multiple Uber cars in his/her fleet, then download our Uber kit at the top right of the linked page.

That sums up everything you need to know to get started as an Uber driver in India. While there are a few steps you will need to take before you get started, it isn’t as difficult of a process as you might think.

Top Car Leasing Programs for Uber Drivers and Entrepreneurs

Uber Car LeaseIf you are looking to become an Uber driver or an Uber partner, what is the most troublesome barrier that presents itself? Having a car that fits the Uber’s requirements for the particular Uber service you are interested in.

Fortunately, there are now ways to overcome this issue with the help of car leasing programs for Uber! We’re going to discuss some of the top car leasing programs that you might want to consider if you wish to work with Uber.

The programs we will discuss are: Uber Xchange, Breeze, and Flexdrive (this is more a rental program, but we thought it was worthy of discussion too). A quick summary of the aforementioned services is listed below (For our detailed discussion go here):

Become an Uber Driver

Uber Xchange Leasing Program:

  • Xchange is a subsidiary company of Uber (similar to Raiser)
  • $250 Deposit to get a lease
  • You are not limited to a Prius (UberX and UberXL cars only)
  • Expect a credit check
  • No Limit on Mileage
  • Ability to break a lease before 3 years (for $250)
  • Available initially (pilot program) in California, Maryland and Georgia
  • Interest Rate – 11.6%
  • Uber car lease cost:  $100 a week for the actual lease
  • Payment includes (car, and maintenance)
  • URL: https://get.uber.com/cl/xchange/

Breeze Leasing Program:

  • Uber car lease cost:  Expect to pay around $195 a week for the lease
  • $250 Deposit to get a lease
  • Limited to a Prius
  • 600 Miles a week (or 31,200 miles a year)
  • $0.15 per mile for mileage over the 600 Miles a week limit
  • You can return the car with a 2 weeks’ notice (no penalty)
  • URL: https://www.joinbreeze.com/

Flexdrive (Rental) Program:

  • No down payment or credit check
  • Swap cars with other participating members whenever you want (based on availability)
  • Uber car lease cost:  Weekly subscription fees of $239/week + tax
  • (Weekly & Monthly Rentals available)
  • One time membership fee of $100
  • Access to a variety of models for UberX, UberXL and UberSelect
  • Payment includes (car, insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance)
  • URL:   https://flexdrive.com/

Uber Xchange

The Uber Xchange leasing program is a real game changer for hopeful Uber drivers or partners, as it allows you to rack up unlimited mileage on the leased vehicle. The weekly lease fee is often around 100 dollars, and you get  a choice from a decent variety of different vehicles.

If you change your mind at a later date, you can always terminate the lease with two weeks’ notice and the payment of a $250 fee.

This program can save you a lot of money compared to a lot of other leasing programs, and the unlimited-mileage aspect is really quite astounding.

In this program, you can lease cars like Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen. Unlike some programs, you will not be limited to a Prius.

In fact, there are even some UberXL vehicles that qualify for this program, which is great for drivers that wish to sign up for Uber’s UberXL services. To sign up with Uber Xchange go here:  https://get.uber.com/cl/xchange/

Breeze Leasing Program

The second leasing program that you might want to consider is Breeze. Breeze is a flexible company that is a great option for those that wish to enter the Uber business. You need to pay about 250 dollars to get started with the program, and $195 a week as your weekly fee.

You are limited to a Prius with Breeze, but this is not necessarily a bad thing, depending on your preferences.

With Breeze, you are allowed 600 miles a week—additional miles will be charged 0.15$ per mile. However, 600 miles is quite a lot! Make sure you use up all of these miles to get the most bang for your buck.

The main plus, with Breeze, is the ease with which you can return a car. With just two weeks notice, you can return a car:  It is an uncomplicated and easy procedure.

Breeze is a good option for new drivers, in particular, due to the easy return system. It is pricier than the Uber Xchange program, but it is still a noteworthy program to consider if you want to delve into the world of being an Uber contractor without having to purchase a car flat-out. To sign up with breeze go here: https://www.joinbreeze.com/

Flexdrive (rental) Program

The third option we looked at for leasing is Flexdrive (even though it isn’t really a leasing program). Flexdrive is a flexible car rental program for drivers that want flexibility (you don’t have to be an Uber driver to use it).

With Flexdrive, you have monthly and weekly rental options; you also have the ability to swap out cars (depending on availability). The beautiful thing about Flexdrive is the fact that you don’t have to worry about maintenance or insurance (which can be a big concern for Uber drivers). To sign up with Flexdrive, expect to pay around $239 per week (cheaper than Breeze, but more expensive than the Xchange progam), and a onetime membership fee of $100. To get started with flexdrive, go here: https://flexdrive.com/

Different types of UberX Services

UberXUberX is the most used and well known Uber service worldwide, and for good reason. It is not only the most affordable service, it is required by Uber to have a definite quality level, making it better than the average taxi. This, in addition to its very affordable price, is why it is preferred by many passengers over the higher-end services such as UberBLACK and UberPlus.

For someone that wishes to become an Uber driver in the UberX category, things can be a little bit complicated. UberX is not just one simple category–it has several sub-categories which you need to be educated about before you delve into the world of becoming a driver or an Uber Partner. Once you are thoroughly informed about all the different segments of UberX services, you will be able to pick the one that is best for you, and which you will truly enjoy.

UberPOP

UberPOP is one of those sub-categories. This version of the UberX service is available only in certain European countries, and it makes use of small, private vehicles. This service is very low cost and widely used in Germany, France, etc. It is quite similar to the regular UberX services available in American and Asian countries but has been given a different name due to legal reasons (There are countries where rideshare is legal as long as the primary objective is sharing costs and not making profit: UberPop variant targets the former). The same types of vehicles are generally used, and the driver’s requirements are the same as the usual UberX drivers.

UberXL

Next is UberXL. While some people consider this to be in a completely different category, the truth is that it is still a part of the UberX service. The requirements for this sub-category are all the same as the regular UberX service, except for the fact that the vehicle needs to be larger. The driver’s requirements, however, are not particularly different. One plus of this sub-category is that the ride fare is higher, which means you will earn more per  client you drive.

Another thing that you need to know about UberXL is that you can get clients from the regular UberX customers, as well as from the customers specifically searching for UberXL cars. This is a huge advantage over the vanilla UberX, because you have a larger passenger pool, and, therefore, a better chance at a higher revenues (as compared to the vanilla/popular UberX).

UberX (The Popular One)

UberX is the primary Uber service and the most popular version of “UberX” (I hope that didn’t confuse you :) ).

UberX drivers typically have cars like the Toyota Camry, Ford Escape, Ford Escort, etc. The main requirements on how to become an Uber X driver are listed in this blog post here. As for the requirements for the UberX car, (in most cities) it must be a model from the year 2006 or newer, and it must have passed an independent inspection (see our blog post here for more information that will help in selecting the perfect UberX car: Uber Car Requirements: 580 Uber X cars analyzed). To sign up to drive for UberX go here: http://www.uberkit.net/signup

This form of UberX is the most popular Uber service, and as such receives the most customer patronage but generally has the lowest passanger fares. That means you will need to drive more people to earn an equal amount as the UberXL service; however, if you cannot afford an UberXL sized car, this may be a better option for you.

UberX Livery

UberX livery is the ‘original’ form of UberX with a small twist: For this flavor of Uber, you need to have a commercial transportation license; virtually everything else, as compared to the primary UberX service remains the same.

For this service, you are required to have a medium sized vehicle that is not too old (2006 or newer) which can easily fit 4 people. Note- UberX Livery is not available in every city.

That sums up the four major sub-categories of the UberX services. Now that you are fully equipped with this knowledge, go ahead and pick what works for you.

To Increase Your Uber Revenue, You Need KPIs

Every mile counts! Learn How Easy It Can Be To Plan, Monitor and Verify Your Uber Revenue

How do you achieve a big goal without setting, working on, and measuring it? Yeah, we don’t know either. What we do know, is that the first step to making money and achieving your goals is to actually set them. The methods we will describe here can actually apply to all areas of your life, but as an owner of an Uber business, today we’re solely focused on your Uber Revenue.

We mean that in order to succeed you should pull out a piece of paper and a pen; a notepad or an app right now and take a stand for your own success. You need to get your thoughts out of your head and listed in some place that you will visually reference, often.

Your Uber Revenue goals are the measure of your success as an Uber business owner – and they are one of the most important Key Performance Indices (KPI) as you start or expand your Uber business. In our Uber owner business kit, we offer specific examples based on our experience and feedback from drivers around the world.

Uber Revenue

The formula which applies to every car you own is a proven equation, which we will summarize for you now. Also, it should be noted that there are slight market changes every day in the transportation industry, and knowing when to modify your line items is essential to producing accurate information.

The primary (not exhaustive) cost factors are:

  • Your daily operational costs like fuel
  • Periodic costs like oil changes, maintenance, and purchases
  • Monthly costs like insurance and loan payments
  • Annual costs like vehicle registration and any local licensing fees
  • Overhead costs like Uber’s fees and driver pay

Your Uber Revenue is the last factor of the equation. Your revenue varies based primarily on the following-

  • Rates charged to the riders ,be that regular or surge pricing
  • Demand for your drivers and their ability to log miles during most of their shifts,
  • Royalty paid to Uber business owners, after Uber takes their commission.

Although you can predict surge pricing, some of these factors are not entirely under your control. The data should be recorded, monitored closely, and after some time can be used to analyze your market.

Your revenue data also needs to be reliable so that your per mile equation is accurate! As discussed in our blog post on “How to verify your Uber revenue”, several software and apps exist in the market to support your efforts at accurately tracking every financial aspect of your business. Once your data has been verified as accurate, you then divide those totals over the expected distance you intend for each car to drive to determine your per mile revenue goal.  See our sample formulas below-

Become an Uber Driver

Expected Revenue per mile = ERPM

      • Expected Total Revenue from Uber = ETR
      • Miles Expected to Drive = EM
      • ERPM = ETR/EM

Revenue per mile = RPM

      • Total Revenue from Uber = TR
      • Miles Driven = M
      • RPM = TR/M

Your Goal

    • RPM is greater than or equal to ERPM

Note- Set a value for your ERPM, so you have a business target/goal, and actively monitor your RPM. Over the course of your business continue to compare your RPM to ERPM. Remember your goal is for the RPM to be at or greater than the ERPM.

Doing the aforementioned will help increase the odds of having a viable business. (Note, in this blog post we have not discussed monitoring costs, which is an essential element in ensuring profitability)

Depending on your KPI goals, you may find that taking advantage of revenue surges in your market either based on time or location will greatly impact your goal achievement. The small investment of your time, and additionally the use of our kit to detail the equation for you, will be a great tool for your business and a firm method for adhering to your plan and achieving your goals.

Uber Partners, Why It Is Important To Review Passengers

Star Ratings Are Important to Owners as well as Drivers

Ah, the all important star rating. Those little grey/red stars are the lifeblood of your business – and they are equally as important to your riders. Uber’s passenger reviews are an opportunity for your driver(s) to be active in the marketplace and improve the Uber community as a whole.

Much like you only want riders who can actually pay for the fare, you also want to ensure that you (the Uber partner/ Owner or driver) are supporting the overall quality of the community, by empowering your driver(s) to perform accurate reviews on their experience with each rider.

Uber Partner 5 star Rating

You’ll know from our other post on star reviews for drivers how important this system is to the quality of your business. Thankfully, Uber feels the same way about only offering their services to riders who respect the driver, the car, and the service of excellent and safe door-to-door transportation. Just like your driver, if a passenger’s aggregate rating over time is low, they will likely be banned, or just not be picked up by Uber drivers. We don’t want those passengers who never fail to throw up in the car :)

We hope that every ride is a five star ride! You and your team of drivers can do many things to ensure that everyone has a five star experience. When the Uber driver doesn’t have a five star experience, as an owner it is your job to coach your drivers on the importance of leaving passenger feedback.

We don’t feel it is appropriate to give a rider a low rating because they have a conversation about politics and find they personally disagree on issues. We also don’t think low ratings are deserved if the rider is on their phone during a private ride or if the rider decides to be silent and not speak during the ride. Those are all really personal preferences.

Consider that 4 and three stars are damaging to the rating of riders, and so really anything less than five reflects a negative experience. As owners (or Uber Partners) ourselves, we personally deem any behavior that risks the value of your asset, the health and safety of your driver, or the health and safety of the rider are things which would merit a low rating for the fare. Things like a passenger- lighting up a cigarette without asking, dropping food, damaging your car, excessively dirtying your car (i.e. partygoers throwing up in your car), or distressing your driver are good reasons to rate a passenger low. We’d also like to note that any actual damage of your car by a rider should be reported to Uber immediately.

Again we hope that you have all happy, engaging, professional, and polite riders, but sometimes your team may experience fares which really do deserve low ratings. When that happens you should protect both your driving team as well as your physical assets by using the rating system and when necessary by following up with Uber directly about the situation.
